What does a UV light do in an air conditioner?

It keeps the indoor coil and drain pan clean. The coil is wet whenever the AC runs and grows mold and biofilm, which causes the musty startup smell and chokes airflow. The UV lamp stops that. It does not clean the air in the rooms by itself.

Which is better for cedar fever, a purifier or a better filter?

A 4 or 5-inch media filter first, because it physically catches the pollen before it reaches the coil and ducts. Add a REME HALO if allergies are serious. The dense 1-inch allergy filters at the hardware store restrict airflow and can hurt the system.

Will a REME HALO work with my heat pump or mini-split?

With a heat pump, furnace or any ducted air handler, yes. A ductless mini-split wall unit has no duct to mount it in, so it needs a different approach; ask us.

How much does it cost to install a REME HALO or UV light?

Priced for your system and given in writing before any work starts; the $65 trip charge is applied to the job. Ongoing cost is a cell every few years for the REME HALO and a bulb about yearly for the UV light.

How often do the filter, cell and bulb need replacing?

Media filter every 6 to 12 months, UV bulb about once a year, REME HALO cell every two to three years depending on use. We can take care of all three on a seasonal tune-up.

Does a purifier help with the musty smell when the AC turns on?

That smell is almost always the coil and drain pan, so the fix is a UV light at the coil, not a room purifier. If the smell is in the rooms themselves, a REME HALO handles that.

My house is dusty no matter what. Will a purifier fix it?

Usually not by itself. Constant dust means the ducts are pulling attic air in or the filter is not catching it. We check the ducts and filter first; sealing and a media cabinet fix the cause, and a purifier cleans up what is left.

The REME HALO (made by RGF Environmental) mounts inside the supply duct next to the air handler and treats the air in every room while the system runs. It uses ionization plus low-level hydrogen peroxide to clump fine particles so the filter can catch them, and to break down odors, bacteria, viruses and mold spores in the air and on surfaces. It is the option we recommend most for allergy households, pet owners and weekend homes that come back smelling closed-up. It installs in about an hour on most systems, runs on the air handler's power, and the cell is replaced every couple of years. It works with heat pumps, gas and electric furnaces, and ducted mini-split air handlers.

UV light sticks at the coil

The indoor evaporator coil is wet every minute the air conditioner runs, from April into October around the lake. Mold, bacteria and a slimy biofilm grow on it and in the drain pan, which is where the sour, musty smell on startup comes from, and the buildup chokes airflow and clogs the condensate drain. A germicidal UV-C lamp mounted at the coil keeps that surface clean. It does not purify the air in the rooms; it keeps the dirtiest part of your system from becoming the source. UV lights pair well with a REME HALO and are a cheap fix for a house that smells like old AC. Bulbs are replaced about once a year.

Media filter cabinets: the fix for cedar season

The 1-inch filter in most Lago Vista homes catches lint and not much else, and the dense 1-inch "allergy" filters starve the system of air. A media filter cabinet holds a 4 or 5-inch pleated filter with far more surface area, so it catches mountain cedar pollen, dust and mold spores without hurting airflow, and it only needs changing every 6 to 12 months instead of monthly.
