What to Know About Sewer Line Repair

What is a sewer line repair?

A sewer line repair fixes the pipe that carries wastewater from your house to the city main or your septic system. When that pipe cracks, shifts or fills with roots, wastewater slows down or backs up, and you will see it first in the lowest drains, usually the tub, shower or a floor drain. We start with a camera so we can show you exactly what is wrong before we quote anything.

Real Texas Plumbing - Heating and Air repairs sewer lines for homes in Lago Vista, Jonestown, The Hollows and around Lake Travis. Call (512) 662-2949.

Signs your sewer line needs attention

  • More than one drain is slow or backing up at the same time

  • Gurgling from a toilet or drain when water runs elsewhere

  • Sewage smell inside the house or in the yard

  • A wet, sunken or unusually green patch in the yard along the line

  • Clogs that return soon after a drain is cleared

One slow sink is usually a drain problem, not a sewer line problem. See our drain cleaning page. When several drains are involved, or a cleared drain keeps coming back, the line itself is the likely cause.

What causes sewer line problems here

Lago Vista homes sit on hillsides and limestone above Lake Travis, so lines run on slopes and through rock. Over time the ground shifts and lines can crack, separate or sag, and tree roots find the joints. Older lines are more likely to fail than newer ones. If you have a grinder pump, the line leaving the pump is under pressure and fails in different ways; see the next section.

If you have a grinder pump or septic system

Not every Lago Vista home has a gravity sewer. Many are on grinder pumps, and some are still on septic. We ask which you have on the first call, because the fix is different. If your grinder pump alarm is on, the problem may be the pump, the check valve or the discharge line, not a broken sewer line, and we will check all of them. See grinder pump service and grinder pump alarm repair. If your slow drains turn out to be a full septic tank, we will tell you so you can call a septic pumper instead of paying us for the wrong fix.

Whose pipe is it?

You own the sewer line on your property. The City of Lago Vista owns the public main. If we find the blockage or break is on the city's side, we tell you and report it, and you do not pay us to fix the city's pipe. If you have a grinder pump, you also own the pump, the tank, the alarm panel and the line up to the city main.

How we find and fix the problem

  1. You call or text. Tell us which drains are slow, whether you have a grinder pump or septic, and whether anything is coming up.

  2. We find the cause. We use a camera on the line so we can see cracks, roots, sags or a blockage and show you what we see.

  3. You get written options. You get a written price for each option, with what each one fixes and what it does not. Nothing starts until you approve.

  4. We repair and test. We make the repair and run water to confirm the line is flowing.

A $65 trip charge applies and is credited toward the work if you go ahead.

Repair or replace the line?

Repair is usually right when the damage is in one spot. Replacement is worth discussing when the damage runs along much of the line or the same line keeps failing. We show you the camera footage and the price of each option, so you can compare them. If you already have a quote from someone else and want a second look, call us.

If sewage is backing up now

Stop using water in the house: no showers, laundry or dishwasher. If sewage is coming up into a tub or floor drain, call right away. Those calls get priority. We do not dispatch overnight. If it happens after hours, stop using water and call when the office opens at 7:30 a.m. on weekdays or 8 a.m. on Saturday. See also emergency plumbing.
