Leak Detection in Lago Vista, TX

A water bill that jumped, a hissing sound with every faucet off, or a floor that feels warm or damp can all mean a hidden leak. Real Texas Plumbing finds it, explains what we found in plain words, and gives you a written price before any repair starts. We use pressure testing, fixture isolation and non-invasive locating first, so walls and floors stay closed until we know where to open them. Call (512) 662-2949 or book online.

How do I know if I have a hidden water leak?

Most hidden leaks give a warning. Look for these signs:

  • A water bill that rises with no change in how you use water.

  • The sound of running or hissing water when every fixture is off.

  • A warm spot on the floor, which can mean a hot water line is leaking.

  • Damp, stained or bubbling drywall, flooring or baseboards.

  • Cracks in tile or drywall, or doors that suddenly stick.

  • A musty smell with no visible cause.

  • A soggy or unusually green patch in the yard, which can mean a leak in the line outside.

  • Low water pressure that did not used to be low.

How can I check for a leak myself?

Start with the meter. Write down the reading on your water meter, use no water for two hours, then check it again. If the number changed, water is going somewhere. The EPA suggests the same test, and its Fix a Leak Week page also covers it.

Then check the usual suspects. Put a few drops of food coloring in each toilet tank and wait 10 minutes without flushing. Color in the bowl means a leaking flapper, which our toilet repair page explains. Look under sinks and around the water heater for drips or rust. If you find a leak and cannot stop it, turn off the main water valve and call us.

Please do not cut into drywall or a slab to look for the leak yourself. A small hole in the wrong place costs more than the leak.

How do you find a hidden leak?

  1. Symptom review. We start with what you have seen, heard and noticed on your bill, because that narrows where to look.

  2. Testing and pinpointing. We use pressure testing, fixture isolation and non-invasive locating to narrow the leak down to a section of pipe. For suspected drain or sewer line problems, a sewer camera inspection lets us see inside the line.

  3. Findings and options. We show you what we found, explain your options, and give you a written price before any repair begins. If a wall or floor has to be opened, we tell you where, why and what it costs first.

What does leak detection and repair cost?

You get the written price before we start, and the $65 trip charge is credited toward the work when you schedule it. What you pay depends on where the leak is, how hard it is to reach, the pipe material and the size of the repair. A leak at a fixture or exposed pipe is a different job than one inside a wall or under a slab.

Our starting prices on repairs once the leak is found:

  • Plumbing leak repair starts at $389.

  • Pipe repair starts at $700.

  • Water line repair or replacement starts at $2,800.

  • Frozen or burst pipe repair starts at $800.

  • Plumbing inspection starts at $495, and sewer camera inspection starts at $395.

If one leak is a sign that a whole pipe system is failing, we will say so and show you the options, including repiping, before you decide.

What causes hidden leaks around Lago Vista and Lake Travis?

Hard water and older pipes. Central Texas water is hard, and over the years minerals and corrosion wear out pipes, fittings and valves. Older homes are the most likely to develop pinhole leaks.

High water pressure. Water pressure much above 80 psi stresses pipes, fittings and fixtures, and leaks often follow. A pressure-reducing valve protects the plumbing, and we install and repair them.

Shifting soil. Central Texas clay and limestone soil swells and dries with the weather, and it can stress buried lines and the plumbing under a slab.

Freeze damage. A hard freeze can crack pipes and fittings, and the leak may not show until the thaw or later. Our broken pipe repair page covers freeze and burst-pipe repairs.

Grinder pump systems. Many homes in Lago Vista and around Lake Travis use a grinder pump that pushes wastewater through a pressurized line. A wet patch of ground with a sewage smell may be a leak in that line, not a water line. Our grinder pump team handles both.

Lake and weekend homes. A leak in a house that sits empty can run for days before anyone notices. Turning off the main water valve when you leave is the cheapest protection there is.

What happens after you find the leak?

We explain what we found and what each option costs, and you decide. Most repairs are done by repairing the leaking section, whether that is a fitting, a section of pipe or a fixture connection. If the pipes are failing in several places, we will talk with you about whether repiping makes more sense than repeated repairs. If you plan to file an insurance claim, tell us when you call and ask your insurance company what documentation it needs. We give you the written price to share with them.
