No heat? Here's what to do right now

If you smell gas, or your carbon monoxide alarm is going off, leave the house and call 911. Don't call us first.

If it's just cold and the heat won't come on, the steps below will tell you what's safe to check, what to leave alone and how to protect your home until we can get there.

Real Texas Plumbing is a family-owned plumbing, heating and air company with shops in Lago Vista and Lakeway. We repair furnaces and heat pumps in homes around Lake Travis. We work on homes only.

Our hours: Call (512) 662-2949, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., or Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon. We don't advertise after-hours or overnight service, so if your heat fails after we close, use the steps on this page and call us when we open. Every visit starts with a $65 trip charge, and we apply it toward the work.

What counts as a heating emergency?

Is no heat an emergency?

It depends on the weather and who's in the house. Here's how we'd sort it:

  • You smell gas: Emergency. Leave the house and call 911 or your gas utility.

  • Your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, or you feel sick when the furnace runs: Emergency. Get everyone outside and call 911.

  • No heat in freezing weather, with a baby, an older adult or someone ill at home: Emergency. Get them somewhere warm, then call us.

  • No heat in freezing weather, healthy household: Urgent. Pipes can freeze, so protect the house and call as soon as we're open.

  • Furnace or heat pump won't start in mild weather: Can usually wait for the next opening. Try the checks below.

  • Heat pump blows cool air for a few minutes, or steam rises from the outdoor unit: Usually normal. The heat pump is clearing frost.

  • Uneven heat, odd noises or a system that keeps starting and stopping: Not an emergency, but get it checked soon.

  • A burning smell the first time you run the furnace this season: Brief dust burning off is common. If it lasts, smells like plastic or electrical, or you see smoke, shut the system off and call us.

What to do right now

Safety first

  • Gas smell: Don't flip switches or use your phone inside. Walk out, then call 911 or your gas utility from outside.

  • Carbon monoxide: The symptoms are headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea or vomiting, chest pain and confusion. They feel like the flu without the fever, and they get worse when the furnace runs and better outdoors. If you or anyone has them, get outside and call 911.

  • Don't heat the house with a gas oven or stove.

  • Never run a generator, grill or camp stove indoors or in the garage.

  • If you use an electric space heater, plug it straight into the wall, keep it clear of anything that burns, and never leave it running unattended.

  • Don't open the burner compartment, adjust the burners or remove vent pipes. That's a job for a licensed technician.

Furnace not heating? Check these first

  1. The thermostat. Make sure it's set to Heat and set it about five degrees above the room temperature. Replace the batteries if the screen is blank.

  2. The furnace power switch. It looks like a light switch on or near the furnace. Furnaces get switched off by accident more than you'd think.

  3. The breaker. Reset it once if it's tripped. If it trips again, leave it off and call us.

  4. The air filter. A badly clogged filter can make a furnace shut down on its safety limit. If you can't see light through it, replace it.

  5. Gas smell? Stop here. Leave and call 911 or your gas utility. Don't try to relight a pilot.

If the furnace still won't start, or it starts and shuts off again, call us.

Heat pump not heating? Check these first

  1. The thermostat. It should be set to Heat, not Cool or Off, with the temperature above the room temperature.

  2. The filter and the vents. Replace a clogged filter and make sure registers are open.

  3. The outdoor unit. Light frost and a brief cloud of steam are normal. Clear leaves and debris from around it.

  4. The breaker. Reset it once if it's tripped. Don't keep resetting it.

What is "Emergency Heat" on my thermostat? It's a manual setting that runs only the backup electric heat and shuts off the heat pump. It uses more electricity, so it's for when the outdoor unit isn't working, such as when it's encased in ice, damaged, or won't start. If the outdoor unit is fine, leave the thermostat on Heat. The system switches to backup heat on its own when it needs it.

Call us if the outdoor unit is covered in solid ice, if it won't run, or if Emergency Heat is the only setting that makes heat.

Protect the house if it's freezing

  • Let faucets drip on exterior walls, with a slow trickle of cold water.

  • Open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls so warm air reaches the pipes.

  • Close off rooms you're not using, and keep the warmth in the rooms you are.

  • Know where your main water shut-off is. If a pipe bursts, you'll need it fast. See our guide to finding and shutting off your main water valve.

  • If a pipe does freeze or burst, our burst and frozen pipe repair and emergency plumbing pages can help.

What we repair

We repair gas furnaces and heat pumps. Common problems we're called for:

  • A furnace that won't start, or starts and shuts off again

  • Furnace blower and ignition problems

  • Thermostat problems

  • A heat pump that isn't heating, or blows cool air when it shouldn't

  • A heat pump outdoor unit that's iced over or won't run

For regular service, see our heating repair and heating tune-up pages. If your system is old and the repair bills are adding up, see heating replacement.

What emergency heating repair costs

How much does emergency heating repair cost in Lago Vista?

Every visit starts with a $65 trip charge, and we apply it toward the work if you go ahead. Once the technician finds the cause, you get a written price before we start, and nothing begins until you say yes.

What changes the price:

  • the type of system, furnace or heat pump,

  • what failed and which parts it needs,

  • how easy the equipment is to reach, and

  • whether the repair is worth it, or the system is at the point where replacement makes more sense.

A thermostat or a tripped safety switch is a very different repair than a failed blower motor or a heat pump compressor. We'll show you what we found and what each option costs, and we'll tell you honestly if we think a repair isn't worth it.
